Operational Activity Planning

Activity Specific Operating Guidelines (ASOG)

Activity Specific Operating Guidelines is a tabulated method used for planning and execution of dynamic positioning-related activities. An ASOG states both the set-up of the DP system for a defined operation and the actions to be taken by the crew following an undesirable event. ASOG is based on the principle of 'preparing for the worst and functions as a quick guide to minimize the potential impact in the event of a failure to the DP system. Depending on the operator, shipowner, or charterer, different annotations such as WSOG, LSOG, or FSOG are used instead. Since ASOG is specific to one activity, a vessel may have multiple ASOGs depending on the number of DP activities the vessel is capable of.

Critical Activity Mode (CAM)

Critical Activity Mode defines the most fault-tolerant configuration of a vessel. CAM outlines the setup that will result in the lowest likelihood of a single failure causing the vessel to exceed its worst case failure design intent. A vessel usually will only have one CAM and it is to be followed when the task being carried out requires the highest safety standard.

Task Appropriate Model (TAM)

A vessel can have multiple configurations for all the different activities it is to carry out. While CAM is the configuration that yields the most robust DP system, it is also generally the costliest configuration to employ. Not all activities carried out by the vessel requires the high safety standard CAM provides. Therefore, multiple configurations with lesser robustness are planned out and given the name Task Appropriate Mode. Depending on the risk associated with the activity, TAM of different levels of robustness can be employed.
